Fathoms, Metres, or Feet

A Sounding of Six Has Grounded Ships. The Units Box Was on the Chart All Along

Older charts gave depths in fathoms, newer ones in metres, some in feet. A six can therefore mean thirty-six feet or six — and the panel declaring which is small, dull, and the most important thing on the sheet. Supplement panels have the same problem in three forms.

Our Coordinates

A quantity without its unit is not a quantity. These three are how we keep the unit attached.

Every Amount Carries Its Unit and Basis

When we state an amount we state what it is an amount of — the compound itself, an extract, or dried plant equivalent — because those three are not interchangeable. A figure quoted without its basis cannot be compared to anything, which is frequently the reason it appears that way.

The Route Ends With Your Pharmacist

Converting between units and bases is exactly the work a pharmacist does daily and does correctly. Bring the actual bottles rather than your reading of them — the panel is the source document, and someone who reads these professionally will see in a moment what takes a layman an evening.

No Conversions Performed Silently

Where a comparison requires converting between units, we show the conversion rather than presenting the result. A converted figure that arrives without its arithmetic is asking to be trusted, and this is a subject on which nobody should be asked for that. We sell no supplement, hold no affiliate arrangement, and publish no testimonials.

This is about reading labels, not about setting your own amounts. Understanding how a figure is expressed does not tell you how much of anything you should take, and the arithmetic here is for comparison rather than for dosing. Several of the nutrients involved have upper limits where the difference between units genuinely matters, which is a reason to let a pharmacist do the conversion rather than a reason to attempt it confidently yourself.

No supplement replaces eating properly or proper clinical care. Any change you have in mind — beginning something, stopping something, taking more or less of it — belongs with your doctor first, with no exception where prescription medication or an existing condition is involved.
